Podcast #2: Carli Storms

Life is definitely more fun with someone who believes in magic, who is always down for adventure, and who is nothing short of her authentic self. That someone is my talented friend Carli Storms who just released a BADASS NEW EP called ‘Unconditionally Myself’ on Oct 30, and who I gratefully had as a guest on my Beatsthatsetmypulse podcast to discuss this EP and share her process. We touched on her journey from Arizona to Los Angeles and the ways in which she found her footing and her tribe. We also touched on the inspiration behind each song on her EP (including her favorite, which you must watch to find out!), and the perspectives that helped her persevere despite inevitable obstacles and challenges. She reminds us to be present and aware of the magic that is truly all around us, even during tumultuous times: “There’s magic in the air, when I become aware.” This is a particularly refreshing mantra to have in the face of political tension and an unpredictable global pandemic. What stands out to me most about Carli is her positivity and her appetite for learning (not just for oysters, haha, which we did enjoy last month together in Catalina). She is always encouraging herself and others to believe in their capabilities and to abolish doubt: “Believe in, hearts’ conceiving, and let your breath unfold… I have no fear, I’m meant to be here.” She is also tough and resilient (as someone with the last name “Storms” should be), and she strives to always be a fearless Phoenix (which she has tattooed on her arm): “I have risen from ashes after I have burned in flames.” (lyrics from her song, ‘Unconditionally Myself.’ Cheers to the talented crew at BetaWave for video production support. 🙏🏼

Make it out Alive (Playlist: Jan 15, 2018)
Compiled by Erica Andreozzi
“I felt the music hit my bones and I fell back
I fell into the clouds
My feet weren’t touching the ground
We started to float around” – Angus and Julia Stone (‘Make it Out Alive‘)
Mammut is by far one of my FAVORITE ICELANDIC BANDS and have been ever since I first discovered them at the Great Escape music festival in Brighton back in 2013. I am somewhat OBSESSED with their newest album, Kinder Versions, especially after getting hooked on ‘Kinder Version‘ (“I’m bringing all my stories back, erasing all the kinder versions of my past”) ❤ ❤ ❤ , ‘The Moon Will Never Turn On Me‘ (“I want to make this right but I don’t feel right, Cause sometimes life tries to eat us up… but then I take a look around and see how dust turns into gold and I embrace this world, embrace the world, embrace the world and I love it all”), and ‘Pray for Air‘ (“Taste the dirt of the water… you know you’ll never be pure.”) *Note: Air in water unfortunately would mean less blue ice when that water freezes!* Not only did National radio and television RÚV chose Kinder Version as the best album of 2017, but it was The Line of Best Fit selected it at #18 for 2017. Mammut was also awarded performers of the year (Krókurinn 2017, Menningarverðlaun Rásar) and selected to be on KEXP‘s top 10 list of the YEAR. They definitely had a REMARKABLE 2017! Can’t wait to post my review on them! I got some epic videos of their first set of Airwaves in Reykjavik, especially during ‘Kinder Version‘ when Kata pointed to me about a 1 min in and asked “Have you been excited?” with a gaze that stared into the depths of MY SOUL. If I wasn’t excited before, I certainly was after.:)

Minus the Bear: “Hey, let’s cross the sea, and get some culture… Red wine with every meal, and absinthe after dinner” – The Fox Theater in Oakland (Oct 22, 2017)

Written by Erica Andreozzi
Such a treat to have Minus the Bear and SilverSun Pickups share the same stage last Saturday at the Fox Theater Oakland. Two INCREDIBLE BANDS with two very different sound/style, and I’m glad to have been following them both since 2009. I love that Minus the bear played all of my favorites (especially the first!): Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse, My Time, Into the Mirror, and Last Kiss. Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse is one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITES! It’s a perfect anthem for the wondrous wanderlust, and it always makes my heart flutter as it jogs my memories of past adventures. Dave Knudson (lead guitar) was sitting in a chair for most of the set because he recently broke his leg, and Alex Rose (keys, backing vocals) laughed and said they — Jake Snider (vocals, guitar), Cory Murchy (bass guitar), and Joshua Sparks (drums) — prefer it this way because it it reminds them of a casual jam session in someone’s living room. A short but tasty set by these highly seasoned musicians!
