Little Whiskey
(compiled Jan 12, 2015)
EXTREMELY LONG OVERDUE playlist (travel got in the way!), so it’s quite the BEAST, but a growling one, at that. It was very hard to choose the title track, as many of the songs have been in rotation as key anthems in my recent life transition of moving to Melbourne for a research exchange. However, the Sydney-based brother/sister duo, Angus and Julia Stone, were on REPEAT during my first few days here in the Land Down Under. Aside from ‘Get Home,’ (which was already in a previous playlist of mine…Dan and Aaron!), ‘Little Whiskey‘ hold a special place in my heart, and I LOVE this one lyric repeated throughout: “You got fire in your belly and your heart is still wide.” Aside from Angus and Julia Stone (I still remember seeing him with you in London, Carrie!), Daniel Champagne (Cara, Catherine, Tracey!) was another Australian artist (first discovered him in Melbourne 3 years ago), who I listened alot to, and it was nice that he came Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market last week to play in their Summer Series FREE music event. I also started listening to Australian trio, Little May (through a recommendation from Tom and Chris of Passport to Stockholm), and am REALLY DIGGING them. Radical Face (having discovered him at Iceland Airwaves this year…Cissy!) and Gregory Alan Isakov (was HOOKED ever since I saw him back in October…Chloe!) were main staples on my iPod, as well as Ben Howard and Dan Mangan +Blacksmith (Sylvia!), whose recent album are both KILLER (sooooo good). Sun Kil Moon‘s Benji was also revisited several times, especially after seeing Mark Kozelek in London in December; I’ve included his cover of Sonny & Cher‘s ‘I Got You Babe‘ since he sang this old classic with the BRAVE and BEAUTIFUL Leah, whose incredible voice shocked the entire 4,000+ audience…(many even thought it was staged even though it was completely spontaneous!): Here is the video of my girl Le Ah Ha singing the Sonny & Cher‘s “I Got Yo Babe” duet with Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon back in December (London gig). AMAZING.

That month, I also discovered a new English band named Lonely the Brave (singer sounds a bit like Eddie Vedder) through a fellow Augustines diehard, Steve (hammersteve). Speaking of Augustines, their recent tour was a serious LIFE-ALTERING event, and I’m so glad to have experienced FOUR of their most EPIC and MEMORABLE shows to date (Laura, Roisin, Darren, Jocelyn, Annelore, Neil), as well as being INTERVIEWED FOR THEIR FILM (thank you, Brendon!). I also needed ot include some siiiiick tracks from Pela (Chris!), Billy and Eric’s and before grabbing Rob and forming Augustines. So glad that Augustines played ‘Waiting on the Stairs‘ at almost every show this recent tour. Finally, it was really awesome to see Sylvan Esso (Paige, Steve, Rosie!) in Melbourne this month after seeing them twice last year in London. And, last but not least, I discovered a talented folk/rock quartet from Dunedin named Julia Temple when I was traveling through Kaikoura with Laura. Crazy odds that I randomly ran into them AGAIN on the streets of Queenstown a week later in my trip. MUSIC be making the world go ’round. Enjoy my FIRST PLAYLIST of 2015! 🙂
