The Great Escape (May 16-18, 2013)

The Great Escape is a three-day music festival spread across 30 of Brighton’s finest venues (mostly tiny ones), attracting hundreds of acts from across the world (UK, USA, Canada, France, Belgium, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, Catalonia, Norway, Iceland, The Netherlands, Denmark, South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India). It’s now become the KickOff event of the UK festival season and reminds me a bit of SXSW in Austin (which I’ve been lucky enough to do in 2012!), attracting visitors (esp. music industry folk) from all over the country. I really enjoy that this festival is the stepping stone of most bands that are just starting out (maybe have an EP out but not necessarily a full album), and who still have that hunger & appreciation for crowd interaction. Some even give away free EPs to their fans! Saw over 20 bands with my fellow music junkie, David Brown. Check out his review of the fest at Louder Than War:

Performances I saw (pics below): Big Wave Riders, The Rumor Said Fire, Findlay, Echo and the Empress, Houndmouth, Boats, Embers, The Family Rain, Ewert and the Two Dragons, Marika Hackman, Siblings, Milo Green, Enchanted Hunters, Instrumenti, Dan Croll, Snakadaktal, Kodaline, Bear’s Den, Little Green Cars, Prata Vetra, The Beards, On and On, Feathers.
