Allan Rayman: “God is a Woman, Can she hear me now” – The Rickshaw Stop (March 29, 2017)

Written by Erica Andreozzi

Meet Allan Rayman , a multi-talented MYSTERIOUS MUSE (recently dubbed “the most mysterious man in music”) who DOES it all (writer/producer/singer/after/filmmaker) without needing to ADVERTISE it all. An R&B soul singer with raspy, soul-spearing vocals that singer child down the spine, Allan proves that you don’t need marketing or active social media accounts reel in fans. Without interviews or videos online, he has already rallied 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. For fans of Alex Vargas, Jack Garratt , SOHN , RY X , Caught A Ghost , Chet Faker, let this RAYman shine his ray down on you. The emotionally-charged, elusive storyteller that is Mr. Roadhouse himself was extra animated at The Rickshaw Stop last night. A much more uninhibited, intimate experience on the tiny stage of the Rickshaw Stop compared to his earlier appearance at The UC Theater when opening for James Vincent McMorrow. I will definitely be keeping Allan on my radar.

Creature Comfort (Playlist: Aug 15, 2017)

Creature Comfort

CREATED BY ERICA ANDREOZZI

PERFECT SUMMERTIME PLAYLIST inspired by San Francisco’s very own Outside Lands music festival (Mondo Cozmo, RAC, Bleachers, K. Flay, Jacob Banks, Porches, James Vincent McMorrow, Joseph, Grace Mitchel, Vance Joy, Young the Giant) last week and by recent shows I rocked out to within the last month or so: Portugal. The man, Local Natives, Benjamin Booker, Alvarez Kings, The Trims, Run River North, Saint Mesa). There was additional influence from recent track/album releases by Arcade Fire (LOVE THEIR NEW ALBUM), Geographer, Wild Cub, Allen Stone, Overcoats, Haim, Foster the People, Amber Run, Daughter, Mogwai, and Zach Winters. I was also happy to include tracks by new discoveries: Betty Who (touring with Geographer), Charlie Cunningham (playing with Low Roar in October), Jeremy Loops, and Jaws of Love (gorgeous solo project of Local Natives’s Kelcey Ayer).

“Saying
God, make me famous
If you can’t just make it painless
Just make it painless”

Rising Water (Playlist: Dec 18, 2016)

Rising Water

Compiled Dec 18, 2016

New playlist inspired by recent shows  — James Vincent McMorrow, Vancouver Sleep Clinic (who’s first show in the states was his idol, James Vincent McMorrow), Daughter, Day Wave, The Moth & The Flame, Phantogram, The Paper Kites, Two Door Cinema Club, Broods, DeVotchKa, Beats Antique, Nakho & Medicine for the People, Strfkr, Royal Teeth, Rooney — and recent new discoveries (opening artists) —Allan Rayman, MTNS, Psychic Twins (my friend’s best friend from high school!), The Post Maker (local SF talent). It also includes awesome new recommendations from friends: Sohn, Shura, The Mowgli’s, Plini (siiiick math rock), a new track by Magic Giant, and a new album (We Got it From Here… thank you 4 Your Service) by Tribe Called Quest (first album in 18 years and rumored to be their last). The ‘Water is Life‘ by Dustin Thomas track reminds us of the power of music in fighting injustice (Standing Rock). Caught a Ghost swoops in with his ‘Twelve days of Xmas’ FB giveaways and beautiful acoustic versions of tracks like ‘Uuu’ from his ace album, Human Nature (glad to hear his new one is nearing completion!) 😀

Standout tracks for me are James Vincent McMorrow‘s ‘Rising Water‘ (“Because you make me feel alive, in spite of rising water“) and ‘Los Angeles‘ (“There’s a reason that people move/ People change or people stay the same completely/.. You fear that every move you make is just a hammer/ You are just a nail but you’re not… Don’t let fear control you“), and seeing these brought to life on stage last month definitely hammered on the heart strings and watered the eyes (for pretty much everyone in the crowd). I also am IN LOVE with Daughter‘s new album, Not to Disappear; my music buddy got it right when he said that “Elena traded a pinch of angst for a dash of snark, and it works really well!” The whole album is a SLAYER, but ‘Fossa’ and ‘To Belong’ probably slay me the most: pensive, pent-up aggression with gnarly twists and turns of emotion. Elena never fails to dissapoint! The Moth & the Flame once more, and can’t get enough of their track, ‘Red Flag‘ (“You were the only red flag, the only red flag that I could not raise.”) Finally, if there was any band that could help Oakland find its heartbeat after the recent, devastating Ghost Ship fire, it would be Oakland’s very own Beats Antique, who I was lucky to see a few weeks back with DeVotchKa and Alam Khan: https://www.facebook.com/erica.andreozzi/posts/10100419330250649

James Vincent McMorrow- “Sometimes my hands they don’t feel like my own, I need someone to love, I need someone to hold”

James Vincent McMorrow– Rough Trade East, London

(Jan 16, 2014)

Had to sell my James Vincent McMorrow tickets for the Barbican on Jan 26th because of the Grand Canaria marathon I ran that weekend, so I was SUPER LUCKY to have caught him at his in-store gig at Rough Trade East. This Irishman has pipes that could make the gods weep, no joke. HELLOOOO FALSETTO! (see the videos below if you don’t believe me) He’s also really goofy and made the audience laugh plenty of times with his stories of insomina, fear of flying, and joggin’ at 5 am in the morning when “all the weirdos are out.” It was really cool to meet this awesome human being, and to have him sign my album (although I almost took his sharpie by accident, haha). DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and get tropical, Post Tropical The first song (Cavalier) of this album is INCREDIBLE, as it Red Dust and Lookout. Thank gosh I had the speakers to lean against because I nearly FELL OVER when James hits that INSANELY HIGH NOTE during Red Dust at 3:30 in.

“Sometime my hands, they don’t feel like my own
I need someone to love, I need someone to hold…”

Another favorite, Look Out, sent me on cloud to far away places. A perfect song for the occasional day dream. 😛

“You’ll be lucky once, when the fall listen to send around.
When the sun comes, dry tears from my eyes.
So you come around as the weather starts to change,
and you settle in. And the best has yet been made.”

Then there was one of my favorites from his first album, Down the Burning Ropes, which has so many twists and turns and is bound to keep you engaged.

“Down the burning ropes
Past the places where the steal beams meet concrete skies
You make your bed under the moonlight
I think it’s time we said goodbye.”

Then came the EPIC We Don’t Eat track that I had fallen in love with 2 years ago and could not get enough of the beautiful piano into…(so much anticipation/emotion conveyed through those simple chords!)…This one speaks so much truth, and send shivers crawling down the spine (especially the third verse when the tempo picks up and James goes at it on the drums). My favorite line (“I’d rather be working for something, than praying for the rain“) builds up to the chorus that we all know by heart:

“We don’t eat until your father’s at the table
We don’t drink until the devil’s turned to dust
Never once has any man I’ve met been able to love
So if I were you my friend, I’d learn to have just a little bit of trust.” (TRUTH)

Unfortunately James only had time for one more, and I think we all knew it would be Cavalier, the star of his new album.

“I remember my first love..”

Such a stunning (yes, I said it) song. Very much for the sexy time. Reminds me of bit of Volcano Choir‘s (side project of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon) new album, Repave (also one to check out!)
